Will AI Ever Take Over All Our Jobs?
For a very long time, I’ve been wondering, why do we spend our lives doing jobs we don’t like at all? Why are we working day after day, just to earn enough to barely survive? What’s the point of it all? Were we born just to work? Animals don’t work against their will, except those exploited by humans. We’ve existed for over 50,000 years. Why couldn’t we find a different way of living? Is artificial intelligence going to change the way we live?
I think it's time we accept that AI is certainly going to take over jobs. There aren't two ways about it. If you don't think so, ask yourself, can AI do a significant portion of your job, if not the whole job? If the answer is yes, that's enough. AI may not totally eliminate humans from the workforce, but it will significantly reduce the number of people needed to do majority of the jobs. That's inevitable. It doesn't take great intelligence to understand this, just look around and see how quickly technology is evolving. Self-driving cars, humanoids, ChatGPT, and what not. Technology is advancing at a pace we've never experienced before. AI isn't just another invention like a wheel, electricity or the internet. AI is a milestone and a defining moment in the whole of human existence.
So the question isn’t whether AI will take over our jobs, but what do we do when there are no jobs? Well, isn’t that what we always wanted? How many of you are genuinely excited to work? How many of you would stop working this moment if you had financial security? How many of you dream of early retirement?
Well, our dreams might come true very soon. A majority of us will be out of work in a few years. I don't think people are afraid of losing their jobs, they’re afraid of not being able to earn money when there are no jobs. And if that's your worry, I think you shouldn't be.
As far as I'm concerned, when AI takes over all our jobs, governments may no longer exist, or may become powerless. The big corporations leading the AI revolution will rule the world and live their best lives, while the rest of us exist only to serve them, like in ancient times when kings ruled. Some of us might be used for scientific experiments, and only the strongest and healthiest will be entertained to continue human race. The rest will be left to die. As for financial security, governments or corporations might provide pensions, just enough to survive. If somehow human greed reduces, maybe we won’t go to that extreme.
There is also another possibility. AI takes over our jobs, and most of us will never have to work again. Only those who are truly passionate about something will work on their own terms. Everyone receives a monthly pension, free education, free healthcare, and equal opportunities. Maybe we will finally achieve the economic and social equality we always dreamed of. Sounds great. But would you be able to handle it? Can you sit with your idle brain when you have nothing to do Wouldn’t your brain get dull? Wouldn’t life get boring?
Honestly, I’m not afraid of losing my job to AI or being ruled over by evil capitalists. What scares me to death is the thought of not having anything to do. A boring life is far more dangerous than a difficult life. We were once afraid of animals, then nature, then humans, now AI. In the future, we’ll be afraid of nothing but ourselves.
How many of you are strong enough to look within and not be frightened by what you see? The world you see outside may be ugly, but the world within you is uglier.
