Are we part of a humongous organism?
I have been thinking a lot these days about our purpose in this universe. We are so insignificant in size in the grand scheme of the universe. I wonder if we are too prideful to even think that our existence has a meaning.
It suddenly struck me, what if we are a tiny part of a massive organism? Of course, I’m not a scientist who can prove it with a mathematical equation, nor a baba with a massive following who can create a baseless theory and still get away with it. But it gave me psychological comfort, and it's a self-developed theory that I call the Microrganism Theory.
Let me explain.
The universe is unimaginably massive. To get a perspective, there are trillions of cosmic objects like our Earth in just the Milky Way galaxy, and there are in turn trillions of galaxies in the observable universe.
What could be our purpose in such a supermassive structure? This question has been lingering in my mind and hasn’t let me sleep for days. Then I came across this thought: could we be a part of a giant organism? The universe looks big to us because we are tiny. So basically, what's “big” is always relative.
Each one of us is made up of trillions of cells. What if those cells have consciousness and a world of their own, just like we do? For those cells, we are the unimaginable universe. They can never think beyond us, just like how we can't think beyond our universe. For them, we are God. Isn’t it? They must be asking the same questions we do: What's the purpose of life? What happens after death? Who created the universe? If God created the universe, who created God?
If we think about it, we are responsible for the life of those cells, and we are the supreme power that created them. But do we watch them? Are we counting their good and bad deeds, and rewarding or punishing them in some so-called heaven or hell? Do they have a life after death?
You might think they are too small to have consciousness or a world like us. But aren’t we too small in this universe? We probably are part of a massive organism, which itself may be a tiny being in a larger organism. I know these are silly thoughts that keep us awake at 2 a.m. I’m not saying this theory is my greatest discovery, but what I’ve concluded from this thought gives me great relief. There is no doubt that some higher energy created us. There is no doubt we are relatively insignificant. But we matter in the universe, and we are the universe. Just like the microscopic cells in our body are part of us, they make us. In fact, they are us, no matter how small they are.
But I absolutely think that God is too busy to watch us, sit and count our good and bad deeds, or give us another life. It’s too silly. It’s our pride and ego talking. I certainly don’t think we have a specific purpose in this universe, maybe our existence is the purpose. Just like how the cells in our body don’t have any other purpose than to exist and function, which in turn sustains us.
Finally, I believe our destiny is predetermined.
We have evolved and are evolving just like we were designed to. Like the cells are determined to function in a certain way, and no one controls their individual existence.
But we have free will, to determine whether we want to let the universe flourish or destroy it. Just like how the cells in our body can help us sustain life or kill us.
