Why is there so much hate against TikTok in India?
I must admit, I hated TikTok. I hated it so much that I posted hate-status on Facebook as well. To be honest, I really didn't have any particular reason to hate it.
I hated it just because everyone hated it. (You know that feeling when the majority of people have an opinion about something you automatically tend to exhibit the same opinion). One day I was forced to do a TikTok video by my friends. It took me more than an hour to do one sub-par video. It really hurt my self-confidence, because I always thought making TikTok videos were easy, and I couldn't even do one proper video. For the next few days I tried making more videos only to realize that it requires hard work, skill and imagination to make TikToks as well, much the same as every other business.
When I was scrolling through my Facebook profile the post above which I shared a few days ago caught my eye. I wanted to understand why people are biased toward TikTok, and what made me hate it too. I started researching on it, and figured the 2 main reasons for the majority of people to hate the app:
Cringy videos: I agree that a few TikTok videos are cringy, but there are many creative and skillful videos also. You can always skip the cringy videos and more over, there are many cringy videos on all other social platforms too, if you've not noticed.
Chinese app: Man, we all know that we use so many Chinese products in our day to day life, and it's not really possible for us to stop using them until we are efficient enough to manufacture them in our own country. There is no point in hating only one app, while we continue to use many other Chinese products. Honestly, hating the app by calling it Chinese is just an excuse to avoid addressing the real reason.
If you think about it there is actually only one main reason why most of the people make TikTok videos, and ironically that's the same reason why people hate TokTok; That is popularity.
We all (At least majority of us) crave fame and money. TikTok made people popular in a very short time, and money comes with fame. We wouldn't even think of the hard work and struggle they might have gone through to make those videos, but all we see is their popularity. Since there is popularity and "easy money" everyone started doing TikTok videos. People who are skillful and creative succeeded. Others would go to an extent of embarrassing themselves in a platform that's used all over the world. Some of them become famous too, and I think they deserve it. Because, they put their dignity at stake to gain popularity. Would you do that?
It appears to me that we just hate the fact that people have gained so much popularity in a very short time by making videos that last for a few seconds. We envy TikTokers because we think we do better things in life and still couldn't be as successful as they are.
Inquiring into what you think of others reveals more about you.
